Yak
are Tibetan cattle, native to the Himalayan Mountains of Tibet. “Yak”
is used only for the bull, while “dri” is used to describe a
female yak. When speaking of the animal collectively, Tibetans use
the word “nor”. Well suited for the high altitude and harsh
terrain of the Himalayan range, the yak is a crucial part of everyday
life for the residents of the mountainous country. Tibetans use yak
hair for tents, clothes and carpets, its skin for shoes, coats and
simple boats and its horn for decoration and utensils. Even dried yak
dung is vital as a source of heat during the cold winter days.
